When you work in a hospital or clinic as a podiatrist or chiropodist, you often have to use a wide variety of instruments to help your patients. Sterilisation is a process that kills all living microorganisms, including bacterial and spores. Sterilisation can occur in a number of ways, but autoclaves use steam-heated sterilisation. In order to achieve sterility, a holding time of at least 15 minutes at 121°C or 3 - 4 minutes at 134°C is required.
