26G brown needles are finer than 25G orange needles, and so cause less vein damage when used for injecting into veins close to the skin. They also cause less discomfort when used for injecting under the skin (subcutaneous injection) than orange needles.

These notes are written for needle exchange staff buying 26G 12mm (½ inch) brown needles for distribution through a needle and syringe programme. They will also be of interest to people who inject drugs.

The 26G 12mm (½ inch) brown needle is a fairly fine, short needle. It may be useful for people injecting into surface veins.

The brown needle may not be familiar to many workers or injectors, with many services not stocking anything smaller than the 25G orange needle.
